Located North of Hwy. 9 on Hwy. 27 in Schomberg, Hugh Haven Farms Belgians is a revival of the old times. Having bred, raised and shown Belgians, Roy Hughes may not have known the impact that he would have on his grand-daughter down the road. After raising and showing Simmental cattle, it was a shock when Amy finally got the horse that she’d been asking for over 18 years, against the wishes of Joel…who is now dubbed ‘horse boy’. What started as one is now 17 Belgians altogether; Amy and Joel each owning three and Glen with the remaining 11. With all those horses, you can expect that we’d be busy. The maternity ward will be in full swing for 2009, with 7 foals expected from resident stallions TNR’s Imperial Prince (Guster’s Imperial Lad) and C.J. Lightning (Cowden Coleddie Diamond). Everyone is all revved up until it comes time to figure out who sits up to watch the camera…most likely Joel. Everyone is involved in someway with the horses, including Susie the dog…although she’s more of a hindrance than a help sometimes. Regardless of the dog, we all work together to get the horses prepped for the spring and fall fairs. In 2006, we showed at the Royal Winter Fair for the first time and then again in 2008. We also show at several other spring and fall fairs including Schomberg, Brooklin, the CNE, Orangeville and Rockton. In addition to the many fairs, we also attend several horse sales. Sometimes it’s just to look and catch up with friends, and sometimes it could be to add to the family. Although we don’t always agree on the horse, there are a few things that in general we look for: good feet, lots of action a nice head set, or a horse that will complement something that we already have in the barn. Why don’t you come see for yourself, visitors are always welcome! |
